Who are the “sons of God” of Genesis 6?

15 Feb

There is a popular belief in some Christian circles that the “sons of God” mentioned in Genesis chapter 6 were fallen angels who produced giants with the “daughters of men” before the flood.

Father purposely hid some of His deeper truths so we must dig deep in His Word to discover the truth. My home page provides the foundational scriptures for proper interpretation of OT precepts such as who the “sons of God” spoken of in Genesis chapter 6 are:

https://sumofthyword.com/

Let’s first examine Genesis 6:1-3 verse by verse to establish who causes God to say “My Spirit shall not strive with man for ever, for that he also is fleshby verse three:

Genesis 6:1  And it came to pass, when men(Hebrew~adam) began to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters were born unto them,

The English word “men” in the first verse of chapter 6 comes from the Hebrew word “adam”:

https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H120&t=KJV

This clearly proves the subject of the first four verses are the physical offspring of the first “man” who was “Adam”:

Genesis 2:7 And Jehovah God formed man(adam) of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man(adam) became a living soul.

Is there any sin being named in Genesis 6:1 that would cause God’s Spirit to not strive with man(adam)?

Absolutely not! God told the man and woman to be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth with more men and women who were to multiply also:

Genesis 1:27-28  And God created man(adam) in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.  (28)  And God blessed them: and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Now do we see any sin being named in Genesis 6:2 that would cause God’s Spirit to not strive with man?:

Genesis 6:2  that the sons of God saw the daughters of men(adam) that they were fair; and they took them wives of all that they chose.

Absolutely! God did not want the “sons of God” marrying the “daughters of men” or verse 3 would not express God’s displeasure with those “sons of God”:

Genesis 6:3  And Jehovah said, My Spirit shall not strive with man(adam) for ever, for that he also is flesh: yet shall his days be a hundred and twenty years.

God is clearly declaring the “sons of God” are “men” who His Spirit will not strive with forever for marrying the “daughters of men”!

We are told “not to go beyond what is written” in our Father’s Word which includes the first three verses of Genesis chapter six:

1 Corinthians 4:6 Now these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes; that in us ye might learn not to go beyond the things which are written; that no one of you be puffed up for the one against the other.

But some Christians are going beyond the Word of God by giving heed to Jewish fables such as the book of Enoch which is NOT a part of the cannon set of scriptures:

Titus 1:13-14 This testimony is true. For which cause reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, (14) not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.

If the “sons of God” were fallen angels marrying the “daughters of men”, as is being hyped these days, then Jesus would’ve revealed this when He described the sins occurring in the days before the flood of Noah:

Matthew 24:37-39 And as were the days of Noah, so shall be the coming of the Son of man. (38) For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, (39) and they knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.

Jesus did not even hint of any “angels” being involved. But He did clearly define the “sons of God” as being “sons of the resurrection” which “angels” have absolutely no part in because they never die:

Luke 20:34-36 And Jesus said unto them, The sons of this world marry, and are given in marriage: (35) but they that are accounted worthy to attain to that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: (36) for neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

Only those sons of flesh who are accounted worthy to be part of the first resurrection no longer marry or die but are “sons of God” who are now equal to angels who have never married or died:

Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: over these the second death hath no power; but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

The “sons of this world” are unbelievers who have no regard for the demands of our Father’s Word. But the “sons of God” in our new testament covenant are commanded by our Father not to marry unbelievers:

Galatians 3:26 For ye are all sons of God, through faith, in Christ Jesus.

2 Corinthians 6:14-15 Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers: for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? or what communion hath light with darkness? (15) And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what portion hath a believer with an unbeliever?

The “sons of God” in the old testament covenant were commanded by God not to marry unbelievers as well:

Psalms 82:6 I said, Ye are gods, And all of you sons of the Most High(God).

Deuteronomy 7:1-4 When Jehovah thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and shall cast out many nations before thee, the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than thou; (2) and when Jehovah thy God shall deliver them up before thee, and thou shalt smite them; then thou shalt utterly destroy them: thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them; (3) neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. (4) For he will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of Jehovah be kindled against you, and he will destroy thee quickly.

But it was not long before the “sons of God” were again choosing to marry the “daughters of men”:

Judges 3:5-7 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites: (6) and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods. (7) And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and forgat Jehovah their God, and served the Baalim and the Asheroth.

Even before the law, Abraham understood that our God demanded total separation in marriage from the heathens of Canaan so he sent his servant to take a wife for his son Isaac from Abraham’s kindred:

Genesis 24:1-4 And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and Jehovah had blessed Abraham in all things. (2) And Abraham said unto his servant, the elder of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: (3) and I will make thee swear by Jehovah, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that thou wilt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: (4) but thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.

Isaac passed down this same command to his son Jacob to marry a daughter from his mother’s family so that they would be a pure “company of peoples”:

Genesis 28:1-4 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. (2) Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother’s father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother’s brother. (3) And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a company of peoples; (4) and give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land of thy sojournings, which God gave unto Abraham.

Our Father commanded the Jews not to marry the unrighteous during the 2000 year period from Abraham to Christ. Then again the same command was given to the Christians for the next 2000 year period from Christ till today. So it should stand to reason that the 2000 year period from Adam to Abraham would be the same command for “God seeketh again that which is passed away”:

Ecclesiastes 3:15  That which is hath been long ago; and that which is to be hath long ago been: and God seeketh again that which is passed away.

God’s will today has been His will from the ages which were before us for History(His-story) repeats:

Ecclesiastes 1:9-10  That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.  (10)  Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been long ago, in the ages which were before us.

“In the ages which were before” the Abrahamic covenant would have been the 2000 year period from Adam to Abraham. God would have demanded those men who were called to be “sons of God” before the flood not to live after their flesh just as He has demanded of Abraham’s seed the whole way up through Christ until today:

Galatians 3:29 And if ye are Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, heirs according to promise.

History(His~story) always repeats:

Genesis 6:3 And Jehovah said, My Spirit shall not strive with man for ever, for that he also is flesh: yet shall his days be a hundred and twenty years.

God repented for making men because those He called sons burned in the lust of their flesh for the daughters of men before the flood:

Genesis 6:6 And it repented Jehovah that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

Those “daughters of men” were the women who came from Cain’s lineage. He was cursed and driven out from God’s presence for killing his brother Abel:

Genesis 4:9-14 & 16  And Jehovah said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: am I my brother’s keeper? (10) And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground. (11) And now cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened its mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand; (12) when thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth. (13) And Cain said unto Jehovah, My punishment is greater than I can bear. (14) Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the ground; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth;…..(16)  And Cain went out from the presence of Jehovah, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

Eve made a clear distinction between her eldest son Cain who went out from the presence of God and the new seed of Seth that God blessed her with:

Genesis 4:25-26 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For, said she, God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel; for Cain slew him. (26) And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh. Then began men to call upon the name of Jehovah.

So now we come to the most misunderstood verse in Genesis chapter 6:

Genesis 6:4 The Nephilim were in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them: the same were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown.

The English word “nephilim” comes from the Hebrew word “nephiyl” and is defined as fellows, giants:

https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H5303&t=KJV

Science has proven that before the flood the entire earth enjoyed a warm tropical environment. There was enhanced oxygen in the atmosphere that would have supported larger animals such as the dinosaurs. So it should come as no surprise that men would have also had the capacity to be much larger before the flood:

https://www.genesispark.com/exhibits/early-earth/atmosphere/

God created this water vapor canopy on the second day and called it the “waters above the firmament”:

Genesis 1:7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

So the Nephilim or giants could have easily been on the earth since the days of Cain and Seth’s early descendants:

Genesis 6:4 The Nephilim were in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them: the same were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown.

The phrase “and also after that” in Genesis 6:4 was pointing 500+ years later when Enoch walked with God for 300 years “after” he begat Methuselah:

Genesis 5:21-24 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: (22) and Enoch walked with God “after” he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: (23) and all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: (24) and Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, and Enoch were all alive together as the “sons of God” when Enoch was taken from among them.

The “nephillim” reappeared on the earth once more after the flood in the land of Canaan where Moses sent the 12 spies in to see what the people were like:

Numbers 13:17-18 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way by the South, and go up into the hill-country: (18) and see the land, what it is; and the people that dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;

The fact that the Nephilim were the sons of Anak proves that giants come from men and not fallen angels:

Numbers 13:32-33 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature. (33) And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

So the question becomes who are the “sons of God” in Genesis 6:4? The shorter answer is the “sons of God” were NOT angels whether righteous or fallen for at no time were any angels ever called a “son of God”:

Hebrews 1:5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, This day have I begotten thee? and again, I will be to him a Father, And he shall be to me a Son?

God specifically says that He never called an angel His son nor are they born of Him for they were created spirits by God:

Hebrews 1:7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh(created) his angels winds(spirits), And his ministers a flame of fire:

But for those Christians who argue that the OT “sons of God” were not the same as the NT “sons of God” let’s consider this passage:

Psalms 82:6 I said, Ye are gods, And all of you sons of the Most High(God).

Jesus quoted that Psalms passage in the book of John. He clearly said the scriptures cannot be broken so a “son of God” in the old testament was a “sons of God” in the new testament:

John 10:34-36 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? (35) If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came (and the scripture cannot be broken), (36) say ye of him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?

There were plenty of OT Jews who were born of the seed of Abraham but were rejected from becoming sons of God:

Hosea 1:9-10 And Jehovah said, Call his name Lo-ammi; for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God. (10) Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass that, in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

That passage in Hosea is clearly declaring the OT children of promise through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as sons of the living God:

Romans 9:7-8 neither, because they are Abraham’s seed, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. (8) That is, it is not the children of the flesh that are children of God; but the children of the promise are reckoned for a seed.

Romans 9:25-27 As he saith also in Hosea, I will call that my people, which was not my people; And her beloved, that was not beloved. (26) And it shall be, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, There shall they be called sons of the living God. (27) And Isaiah crieth concerning Israel, If the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, it is the remnant that shall be saved:

Our Father clearly called the children of Israel “my sons” making them sons of God:

Isaiah 43:1-7  But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.  (2)  When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.  (3)  For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.  (4)  Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.  (5)  Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;  (6)  I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;  (7)  Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.

Isaiah 45:9-12  Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?  (10)  Woe unto him that saith unto his father, What begettest thou? or to the woman, What hast thou brought forth?  (11)  Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me.  (12)  I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.

But just to be sure let’s examine the only other 3 passages where the phrase “sons of God” is found in the OT, all being in the book of Job:

Job 1:6 Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan also came among them.

Job 2:1 Again it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan came also among them to present himself before Jehovah.

We know that God took both Enoch and Elijah to heaven before they died:

Genesis 5:24 and Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and he was not found, because God translated him: for he hath had witness borne to him that before his translation he had been well-pleasing unto God:

2 Kings 2:11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, which parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

We also know Peter, James, and John witnessed Elijah and Moses who reappeared from heaven to speak with Jesus on the mountain:

Matthew 17:1-5 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart: (2) and he was transfigured before them; and his face did shine as the sun, and his garments became white as the light. (3) And behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elijah talking with him. (4) And Peter answered, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, I will make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah. (5) While he was yet speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold, a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

Most biblical historians agree that Job existed sometime after the flood up until the time of Jacob. Those “sons of God” mentioned in Job chapters one and two would be those righteous souls who died from the lineage of Seth up through until possibly Jacob depending on when Job actually lived on the earth.

Some of those “sons of God” in Job chapters one and two who presented themselves before Jehovah are listed in the book of Luke:

Luke 3:22-38 and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, as a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son: in thee I am well pleased. (23) And Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, (24) the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph, (25) the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, (26) the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda, (27) the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, (28) the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er, (29) the son of Jesus, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, (30) the son of Symeon, the son of Judas, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim, (31) the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, (32) the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon, (33) the son of Amminadab, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, (34) the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, (35) the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, (36) the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, (37) the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan, (38) the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

In the underlying Greek text of Luke 3:22-38 the word “uihos” is translated to the English word “son”. Though that Greek word is found only in verses 22, 23, and 38, God was clearly proving the lineage from Adam to Jesus were all “sons of God” as most English translations prove by carrying the word “son” through from Jesus to Adam.

Adam was called a “son of God” who was formed by God from the dust of the ground and He breathed into his flesh the breath or spirit of life:

Genesis 2:7 And Jehovah God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath(spirit) of life; and man became a living soul.

Jesus was the Word of God who was the image of His Father and the first born of all His creation:

Colossians 1:15 who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation;

God sent His Holy Spirit with His Word as the seed placed in Mary who became flesh and named Jesus :

Luke 8:11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

Matthew 1:18-20 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. (19) And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. (20) But when he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

Before we examine the final place in Job where the phrase “sons of God” is used let’s explore Genesis 6 with a little more context:

Genesis 6:1-7 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters were born unto them, (2) that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all that they chose. (3) And Jehovah said, My Spirit shall not strive with man for ever, for that he also is flesh: yet shall his days be a hundred and twenty years. (4) The Nephilim were in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them: the same were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown. (5) And Jehovah saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (6) And it repented Jehovah that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. (7) And Jehovah said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the ground; both man, and beast, and creeping things, and birds of the heavens; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

Please notice again that Jehovah clearly labeled the “sons of God” in verse 2 as “men” in verse 3 who in their carnal flesh took for themselves “daughters of men” of all they chose to marry so that God’s Spirit would no longer strive with them.

Man’s heart was only evil continually to the point that Jehovah repented that He had made men for they grieved Him in His heart.

Not one place in that text does God blame angels whether righteous or fallen for all the sin but He does mention man/men ten times as the focal point of his anger for most of the corruption on the earth before the flood:

Genesis 6:8-13 But Noah found favor in the eyes of Jehovah. (9) These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, and perfect in his generations: Noah walked with God. (10) And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (11) And the earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. (12) And God saw the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth. (13) And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

There is a very clear distinction made between Cain and Seth! Cain was driven from the presence of God as an unrighteous soul:

Genesis 4:13-16 And Cain said unto Jehovah, My punishment is greater than I can bear. (14) Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the ground; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it will come to pass, that whosoever findeth me will slay me. (15) And Jehovah said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And Jehovah appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him. (16) And Cain went out from the presence of Jehovah, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

In all three passages in the bible where Cain is mentioned outside of Genesis chapter 4, he is described as offering up a poor sacrifice of unrighteous self works:

Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he had witness borne to him that he was righteous, God bearing witness in respect of his gifts: and through it he being dead yet speaketh.

He was led of the evil one, who we know to be satan, to slay his brother:

1 John 3:11-12 For this is the message which ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another: (12) not as Cain was of the evil one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

Cain only understood naturally, like creatures without reason which are to be destroyed, for not loving one another such as his brother Abel:

Jude 1:10-11 But these rail at whatsoever things they know not: and what they understand naturally, like the creatures without reason, in these things are they destroyed. (11) Woe unto them! for they went in the way of Cain, and ran riotously in the error of Balaam for hire, and perished in the gainsaying of Korah.

Whereas Seth was the only son of Adam described to be after his own likeness and image:

Genesis 5:3 And Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:

This is the same likeness and image that was passed from God to Adam:

Genesis 1:26-27 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (27) And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

God proved that our image and likeness of Him did not include our flesh:

Genesis 6:3 And Jehovah said, My Spirit shall not strive with man for ever, for that he also is flesh: yet shall his days be a hundred and twenty years.

The English word “man” in that text came from the Hebrew word “Adam”. Eve was taken out of Adam and became the mother of all humans who ever lived on the face of the earth:

Genesis 3:20 And the man called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

Eve understood that Cain was driven out from the presence of God and another seed needed to come to replace Abel:

Genesis 4:25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For, said she, God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel; for Cain slew him.

Abel was a prophet who prophesied by his offering that God would someday provide a perfect firstborn Lamb as the final offering for sin:

Luke 11:49-51 Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send unto them prophets and apostles; and some of them they shall kill and persecute; (50) that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; (51) from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary: yea, I say unto you, it shall be required of this generation.

Genesis 4:3-5 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto Jehovah. (4) And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And Jehovah had respect unto Abel and to his offering: (5) but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

For this offering Abel was recognized by Jesus as righteous. Adam and Eve were given Seth to replace righteous Abel:

Matthew 23:35 that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous unto the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar.

Eve knew Cain and his seed were rejected as sons by the Most High so she was looking for the seed she called Seth to replace Abel. Seth and His lineage were commanded by the Most High God to remain separated from the lineage of Cain:

Deuteronomy 32:7-8 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee. (8) When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.

These “sons of God” were to remain separated from those God had driven from His face. God followed through with this same principle and commanded it to His sons in Israel’s day:

Deuteronomy 7:3-4  Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.  (4)  For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.

So Adam passed on to Seth the same likeness and image he inherited from God. Then Adam begat Seth who begat Enosh in that same likeness and image. Then Adam, Seth, and Enosh as three began to call upon the name of God:

Genesis 4:26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh. Then began men to call upon the name of Jehovah.

Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

The truth above should be enough to convince us that the “sons of God” were the lineage of Seth that took the daughters of Cain to marry but some Christians are convinced that Job chapter 38 proves “angels” are “sons of God” in the OT:

Job 38:6-7 Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner stone thereof, (7) When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

One of the biggest errors we as Christians make is to think God exists on a linear timeline like we do. God operates outside of time and exists from everlasting to everlasting. He also has the power to declare the end from the beginning:

Isaiah 46:9-10 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me; (10) declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done; saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure;

Psalms 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

This was proven by God choosing us before the foundation of the world:

Ephesians 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ: (4) even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blemish before him in love:

God also proved this by the works being finished from the foundation of the world:

Hebrews 4:3 For we who have believed do enter into that rest; even as he hath said, As I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

There is only one foundation and corner stone and He is Jesus Christ who was foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world but was not manifested until the end of the times:

Isaiah 28:16 therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner-stone of sure foundation: he that believeth shall not be in haste.

1 Corinthians 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 1:19-20 but with precious blood, as of a lamb without spot, even the blood of Christ: (20) who was foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but was manifested at the end of the times for your sake,

1 Peter 2:6-7 Because it is contained in scripture, Behold, I lay in Zion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: And he that believeth on him shall not be put to shame. (7) For you therefore that believe is the preciousness: but for such as disbelieve, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner;

Ephesians 2:20 being built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief corner stone;

In Job chapter 38, God was clearly addressing Job nearly 2000 years before Christ came while at the same time declaring the end from the beginning when He spoke of the corner stone of Jesus having already been laid which causes ALL the “sons of God” to shout for joy:

Job 38:6-7 Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner stone thereof, (7) When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Not one “fallen angel” would shout for joy about the corner stone of Jesus being laid 2000 years ago!

All angels stand by the throne of the Father whether the fallen to His left or the righteous to His right waiting to be sent forth by the Father as ministering spirits:

1 Kings 22:19-23 And Micaiah said, Therefore hear thou the word of Jehovah: I saw Jehovah sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left. (20) And Jehovah said, Who shall entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one said on this manner; and another said on that manner. (21) And there came forth a spirit, and stood before Jehovah, and said, I will entice him. (22) And Jehovah said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt entice him, and shalt prevail also: go forth, and do so. (23) Now therefore, behold, Jehovah hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets; and Jehovah hath spoken evil concerning thee.

Not one of those spirits have flesh and bones as Jesus and man:

Luke 24:39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye behold me having.

They are all ministering spirits sent forth to do the will of the Father:

Hebrews 1:13-14 But of which of the angels hath he said at any time, Sit thou on my right hand, Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet? (14) Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to do service for the sake of them that shall inherit salvation?

All angels whether fallen or righteous are completely under the control of our Father as His ministering spirits so not one of them ever went rogue and married women!  Man will also be as angels in heaven who neither marry or are given in marriage:

Matthew 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as angels in heaven.

All “fallen angels” are referred to in the scriptures as demons, evil spirits, or unclean spirits for we wrestle against all these principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness, and spiritual hosts of wickedness:

Ephesians 6:12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Some unclean spirits are more wicked than others but they all desire to seek rest by inhabiting the watery house(body) of any foolish male or female believer who is swept of their old sins but have not filled themselves with the Word:

2 Peter 1:9 For he that lacketh these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins.

Matthew 12:43-45 But the unclean spirit, when he is gone out of the man, passeth through waterless places, seeking rest, and findeth it not. (44) Then he saith, I will return into my house whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. (45) Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man becometh worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this evil generation.

Fallen angels have no interest in merely marrying and procreating with human females as they do not differentiate based on sex or flesh:

1 Corinthians 15:39 All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one flesh of men, and another flesh of beasts, and another flesh of birds, and another of fishes.

They desire a watery house to inhabit regardless of whether it’s a male or female human or swine:

Luke 8:32-33 Now there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they entreated him that he would give them leave to enter into them. And he gave them leave. (33) And the demons came out from the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd rushed down the steep into the lake, and were drowned.

So therefore the flesh that the majority of God’s anger is turned toward is man for in his natural carnal state he has no preeminence over the beasts of the earth:

Ecclesiastes 3:18-19 I said in my heart, It is because of the sons of men, that God may prove them, and that they may see that they themselves are but as beasts. (19) For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; and man hath no preeminence above the beasts: for all is vanity.

The “sons of men” in their carnal state of flesh have no preeminence above the beasts and since the scriptures CANNOT be broken that would include the “daughters of men” in their carnal state of flesh.

The “sons of God” should not have lusted after and married the “daughters of men” for their disobedience caused God to repent that He made man:

Genesis 6:4-7 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters were born unto them, (2) that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all that they chose.

We know that God condemned Cain to be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth for murdering his brother:

Genesis 4:12 when thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.

So Cain’s likeness and image as a murderer was spreading through his lineage for Cain’s descendant, named Lamech, killed both a man and a young man:

Genesis 4:23-24 And Lamech said unto his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: For I have slain a man for wounding me, And a young man for bruising me: (24) If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

So if murder was becoming commonplace and righteous men were marrying unrighteous women then it would not be surprising at all for God to have given them up unto a reprobate mind:

Romans 1:28-32 And even as they refused to have God in their knowledge, God gave them up unto a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not fitting; (29) being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malignity; whisperers, (30) backbiters, hateful to God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, (31) without understanding, covenant-breakers, without natural affection, unmerciful: (32) who, knowing the ordinance of God, that they that practise such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but also consent with them that practise them.

We must not forget that before the flood it was not very strange at all for man to converse with the beasts of the field for Eve very casually discussed with a serpent about eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil:

Genesis 3:1-5  Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which Jehovah God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of any tree of the garden?  (2)  And the woman said unto the serpent, Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat:  (3)  but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.  (4)  And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:  (5)  for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.

Please remember it was not until after the flood that God put fear and dread of man into animals minds for God also declared they would become food for man after the flood:

Genesis 9:2-4 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every bird of the heavens; with all wherewith the ground teemeth, and all the fishes of the sea, into your hand are they delivered. (3) Every moving thing that liveth shall be food for you; as the green herb have I given you all. (4) But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.

So if man and animal were able to fully communicate and “every imagination of the thoughts of man’s heart was only evil continually” it would not be very surprising for beastiality to have become rampant upon the earth before the flood:

Leviticus 18:22-25 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. (23) And thou shalt not lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith; neither shall any woman stand before a beast, to lie down thereto: it is confusion. (24) Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out from before you; (25) and the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land vomiteth out her inhabitants.

Many forms of sexual abominations and confusion had defiled the land of Canaan after the flood where no beasts were able to communicate with man but rather feared him.

How much more would deviate sexual perversion and murder been devised in the heart of man when the beasts could also communicate their lusts with man before the flood.

It would not be hard to imagine how corrupt all flesh would have become to the point the whole earth was ready to vomit out the inhabitants so that Father had to destroy the earth as well:

Genesis 6:11-13 And the earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. (12) And God saw the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth. (13) And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

As a side note this website contains an interactive calculator that allows a person to estimate the population of the earth at the time of Noah’s flood with a possibility of up to 30 billion people:

http://www.amunrud.com/noah/population.html

But Noah found favor in the eyes of Jehovah as one who was a righteous man and perfect in his generations which was to walk with God as his great grandfather Enoch did:

Genesis 6:8-9 But Noah found favor in the eyes of Jehovah. (9) These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, and perfect in his generations: Noah walked with God.

Genesis 5:21-24 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: (22) and Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: (23) and all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: (24) and Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

Noah was perfect and righteous among all those generations of brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins who sprung out of his grandfather Methuselah’s sons and daughters after he begat Noah’s father Lamech who also had sons and daughters after he begat Noah:

Genesis 5:26  and Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters:

Genesis 5:30  And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters:

Methuselah and Lamech both died just before Noah entered the ark but all their generations lived around Noah while he built the ark. Not one of “his generations” were righteous enough for God to invite on the ark with Noah and his immediate family:

Genesis 6:9 These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, and perfect in his generations: Noah walked with God.

Jude is another scripture that some try to twist to prove “fallen angels” are “sons of God”:

Jude 1:5 Now I desire to put you in remembrance, though ye know all things once for all, that the Lord, having saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.

Jude was simply trying to give us examples of how God is no respecter of Christians or angels who choose to leave their “principality” which comes from the Greek word “arche” and means their “beginning”:

Jude 1:6 And angels that kept not their own principality(arche), but left their proper habitation, he hath kept in everlasting bonds under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

2 Thessalonians 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, for that God chose you from the beginning(arche) unto salvation in sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

The angels who chose to fall with satan in eternity past are now “principalities” cursed with everlasting bonds under spiritual darkness that roam the heavenly places where Christians wrestle with them:

Ephesians 6:12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities(arche), against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ:

Jude was not implying the angels that left their proper habitation were committing fornication like Sodom and Gomorrah:

Jude 1:7  Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, having in like manner with these given themselves over to fornication and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire. (8) Yet in like manner these also in their dreamings defile the flesh, and set at nought dominion, and rail at dignities.

If one pays close attention to grammar it becomes very apparent that it is “the cities about” Sodom and Gomorrah that “having in like manner with “Sodom and Gomorrah had “given themselves over to fornication and gone after strange flesh”. This is obviously speaking about homosexual desires of the whole city that exceeded their desire for Lot’s two virgin daughters:

Genesis 19:4-11  But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both young and old, all the people from every quarter; (5) and they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men that came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. (6) And Lot went out unto them to the door, and shut the door after him. (7) And he said, I pray you, my brethren, do not so wickedly. (8) Behold now, I have two daughters that have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing, forasmuch as they are come under the shadow of my roof. (9) And they said, Stand back. And they said, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and drew near to break the door. (10) But the men put forth their hand, and brought Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door. (11) And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

Jude was proving that both angels and Christians who choose to teach contrary to God’s purpose will be anathema which means to be accursed:

Galatians 1:8-9 But though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach unto you any gospel other than that which we preached unto you, let him be anathema. (9) As we have said before, so say I now again, If any man preacheth unto you any gospel other than that which ye received, let him be anathema.

So history(His~story) throughout the bible from Genesis to Revelation will always repeat about only those “sons of God” living and walking as “sons of God” will be taken:

Matthew 24:40 Then shall two men be in the field; one is taken, and one is left:

There are some teachers trying to take these two passages and force the “they” in Daniel 2:43 to mean the angels who were cast out of heaven:

Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast down, the old serpent, he that is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world; he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were cast down with him.

Daniel 2:40-45 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron, forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things; and as iron that crusheth all these, shall it break in pieces and crush. (41) And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, it shall be a divided kingdom; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. (42) And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. (43) And whereas thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men; but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron doth not mingle with clay. (44) And in the days of those kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, nor shall the sovereignty thereof be left to another people; but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. (45) Forasmuch as thou sawest that a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

Anyone who pays very close attention to the context of Daniel 2:40-45 can clearly see that the Holy Spirit was implying that the “they” was potter’s clay of many nations mixing with the strength of iron which represents the old Roman empire that is revived as part of the final beast kingdom:

Daniel 2:41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, it shall be a divided kingdom; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.

Daniel 7:7 After this I saw in the night-visions, and, behold, a fourth beast, terrible and powerful, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth; it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.

The Holy Spirit uses Paul to then define our Father as the potter who has a right to make both vessels of honor and dishonor out of the same “man” of clay which Strong’s concordance defines as dust of the ground:

Romans 9:20-21 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why didst thou make me thus? (21) Or hath not the potter a right over the clay, from the same lump to make one part a vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor?

Genesis 2:7 And Jehovah God formed man(adam) of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

There will be more truth added to this teaching as more leaven surfaces that needs to be corrected with our Father’s Word :o)
